This Klein Tools CL150 Clamp Meter is a handy tool to have as an electrician. This flexible amp meter from Klein Tools measures up to an astronomical 3000 amps. When measuring amp draw of parallel fed distribution systems, this is a must have. The Klein Tools CL150 allows you to measure the amperage of multiple wires at the same time. The only downfall is that you can only measure wires of the same phase at a time.
This flexible amp meter is catIII 1000v and catIV 600v rated. This rating means that the components that this meter is made from are adequate to protect you well at 1000v and very good at 600v. It also can withstand a mild fall from 6.6ft without taking catastrophic damage. This meter is also using true RMS technology.
True Rms technology is usually the preferred type of meter for most electricians. AC electricity has 2 types of waves as it alternates. The first type of wave is a sine wave. Sine waves are symmetrical and smooth. This usually equates to very clean voltages. By clean we mean relatively steady. The other type of waves are non-sine waves. These waves are not at all symmetrical or even. These non-sine waves may vary in frequency, shape, or length. Less desirable electrical metering tools cannot measure these non-sine waves accurately. The way a true RMS metering device works, like this Klein Tools CL150, is that is takes the root mean square. This means that the true RMS meter takes multiple measurements in a short time then is quickly calculates the square root of the average reading squared. All that pretty much means it does extra math, so that it is more accurate than simpler tools.
All you have to do to use this Klein Tools CL150 amp meter is turn the unlock knob at the base of the red flexible measuring section and remove one end of the red flexible part. Once you have removed one end simply insert it around the wire or wires that you need to know the amperage of and reinstall the free end back into the now open unlock knob. Now that the flexible part is back where it began, simply turn the knob to the locked position and push the power button to turn the meter on. Once the meter is on it will begin reading. A very nice feature of this meter is that it has a min and max function. This will tell you the highest or lowest amp draw during the current test period. This is especially useful for testing amp draw of motors on start up.
This Klein Tools CL150 flexible amp meter is very useful for industrial electricians. We love ours. If you liked this review and want one you can get yours for $92.99 Here
