This Milwaukee 25' magnetic wide blade tape measure is very nice. This tape measure is about the size of a baseball and very comfortable in the hand. Milwaukee didn't specify the height if the drop test distance so we can't be sure how far of a fall this should withstand. The phrase 25ft magnetic wide blade tape measure tells you most of what you need to know. This tape measure is 25ft and is reported to have a standout distance of 17ft. We have tested the standout of this particular tape measure and we could only achieve a distance of 14ft before the blade collapsed. You probably could go 17 ft straight up but that kind of defeats the purpose of a standout. The added weight of the magnet on this Milwaukee tape measure is probably the cause of the standout not reaching full rated length. We also noticed the blade was slightly twisting the farther out we went. The non-magnetic version should easily go 17ft.
That brings us to the topic of the magnet. We tested the strength of the magnet on mild steel. Our test involved attaching the magnetic tip of the tape measure to the steel and adding weight, in increasing amounts, until the magnet failed. This Milwaukee 25' magnetic wide blade tape measure held up great on this test. We began with an 8oz weight and increased every round of testing by 2oz. The failure weight was 20oz, which is awesome for a small tape measure magnet. You should have no fear of the magnet on this tape measure giving way in normal measuring conditions. The wide blade on this tape measure is a nice added feature.
The wide blade allows for easy reading, even for the worst of eyes. It also provides increased stability when measuring. This is especially helpful when measure bend or cut marks on conduit. The wider blade means you need a wider hook. The wider hook is also a bonus when measuring. So, the stability and the wider hook are both due to there being a wider blade. This blade also makes using the finger cutout more efficient.
The finger cutout on this Milwaukee 25' magnetic wide blade tape measure is awesome. A finger cutout on a tape measure is there so that you can hold the blade in place without having to readjust your grip to use the sliding blade lock. When taking a measurement, you can simply extend the blade and apply pressure to the bottom of the tape measure with your index finger and the blade won't retract while trying to get the measurement. Once you're done with your measurement you can simply release the pressure and the blade will fully retract.
